Food in Week Two
This blog is about a food that sweet and become the 50 best dishes in the world. Certainly, it is an unhealthy food for people, but people have a “cheat day” which give yourself a holiday and eat what you want. This is a French Toast, I would like to explain what French Toast is, where, when, why people love to eat it and how significance in modern society. It is easy to make at home and I highly recommended to try and cook with your family this weekend.
What’s in a French Toast?
- Bread
- Butter
- SyrupÂ
- Egg
Where, when does French Toast comes from and how it spreads to all around the world?Â
- It was from Europe to America, the recipe for arme ritter in Germany in the 14th century
- But the name was first used in England in the 17th century, and later the formula crossed the ocean and landed in the United States with early settlers.
- It’s called “pain perdu” which mean “lost bread”
- Â because people make french toast is made from stale bread to make use of bread that could have been thrown away
How to make it?
- Different countries would have different recipes, let’s talk about the basic one.
- First dip slices of bread in a mixture of beaten eggs, milk, cinnamon and vanilla.Â
- Then, fry the egg-coated bread in a pan until brown
- Finally, people add some syrup and fruit on the top
- But In the United States, people would like to serve with butter, maple syrup and powdered sugar.
- Â sometimes, Americans would put many toppings and cook with bacon, cheese, and even ketchup
- And there is a Hong Kong- style French toast which is sounds like healthier (but is not) compared with American style
- Two pieces of toast are slathered with peanut butter or kaya jam
- Then, soaked in egg batter, fried in butter and served with butter and lots of syrup.
Why do people enjoy it?
- During 17th to 18th centuries, It was a sweet snack or dessert, because people were used to eat a lot of food in each meal
- As time goes by, it changed to be breakfast, it also a family thing which usually eat it on weekends, because it is a day off for parents and children
- Most people like to eat sweet food, because sugar releases dopamine to human’s brain which make them happier and increase energy
