What’s in a French Toast?

  • Bread

  • Egg

Where, when does French Toast comes from and how it spreads to all around the world?

  • It was from Europe to America, the recipe for arme ritter in Germany in the 14th century
  • But the name was first used in England in the 17th century, and later the formula crossed the ocean and landed in the United States with early settlers.
  • It’s called “pain perdu” which mean “lost bread”
    •  because people make french toast is made from stale bread to make use of bread that could have been thrown away

How to make it?

  • Different countries would have different recipes, let’s talk about the basic one.
  1. First dip slices of bread in a mixture of beaten eggs, milk, cinnamon and vanilla.
  2. Then, fry the egg-coated bread in a pan until brown
  3. Finally, people add some syrup and fruit on the top

  • But In the United States, people would like to serve with butter, maple syrup and powdered sugar.
    •  sometimes, Americans would put many toppings and cook with bacon, cheese, and even ketchup
  • And there is a Hong Kong- style French toast which is sounds like healthier (but is not) compared with American style
    • Two pieces of toast are slathered with peanut butter or kaya jam
    • Then, soaked in egg batter, fried in butter and served with butter and lots of syrup.

Why do people enjoy it?

  • During 17th to 18th centuries, It was a sweet snack or dessert, because people were used to eat a lot of food in each meal
  • As time goes by, it changed to be breakfast, it also a family thing which usually eat it on weekends, because it is a day off for parents and children
  • Most people like to eat sweet food, because sugar releases dopamine to human’s brain which make them happier and increase energy
