What is Fugu?
Fugu is a pufferfish dish
It can be lethal if not prepared properly
It is served as sashimi, which means that it is raw and served thin pieces of meat
There are many regulations regarding Fugu
Chefs must earn licenses to prepare and serve Fugu
The chefs must have between 2-3 years of practice and training to be able to legally serve Fugu
The training involves written and practical tests and only 35% of students pass
Chefs must use a certain Fugu knife and it can not be used on anything other than fugu due to risks of poisoning other food
It is estimated that between 0-6 people die from Fugu every year
History of Fugu
Fugu originates from Japan
It can be dated back to the Joman Period of Japan which occurred over 3000 years ago
The preparation and serving of Fugu was banned by the Japanese government 1603-1868
It was briefly unbanned for half of a year by the new emperor of Japan, Emperor Meiji
Fugu was banned again later that year with the ban lasting till 1912
Fugu is the only food that the emperors of Japan are strictly forbidden to eat
