Seven Layer Dip

Seven layer dip is the superior dip, and if you don’t agree then we can’t be friends. It’s made up of layers of guacamole, refried beans, sour cream, salsa, cheese, green onion, and olives. Being primarily vegan, I haevn’t had store bought seven layer dip in about 3 years, so over the weekend I decided to make a plant based version! I used most of the normal ingredients (guac, beans, salsa, green onions, and olives are all vegan FYI) but I substitued sour cream for cashew cream and I omitted the cheese because I find any cheese (dairy or vegan) a wee bit gross. The main ingredient for me that really makes a seven layer dip is the olives on top, as I am an olive fiend.

What is the history of the Olive?

The Olive spread from Iran, Syria, and Palestine across the Mediterranean 6000 years ago. It gained a lot of popularity in Greece and Rome around 3000 years ago, and has since been associated largely with the countries. The Olive spread to North America when the Franciscans moved North towards California In the late 18th century as has since been a part of California’s food production. Olives are a big source of food in Canada too, but mostly through the sale of olive oil. They are also part of Greek mythology thought to be a gift from Zeus. Olives are a good source of healthy fats, vitamin E, copper, calcium, and iron- and they also happen to be very delicious whereever you go!
